Image licensing

Image licensing and attribution

Place images should be representative, attributed, and traceable back to a source and license rather than treated as anonymous decoration.

Media policy

Images are treated as editorial assets, not anonymous background decoration

Hero images should represent the place itself and not a generic regional mood image.
Alt text, attribution, source URL, and license details are stored with the image where available.
Image metadata is surfaced on the page so readers can see the provenance of the media layer.

Preferred sources

Open and attributable sources are preferred

Wikimedia Commons and other clearly licensed open sources are preferred when they have representative images.
Licensing metadata is preserved where the source provides it.
Image usage should remain compatible with the product's need for attribution and later corrections.

Issues and removal

Licensing or attribution issues should be corrected quickly
